I’ve always really enjoyed the fact that January 1st is my birthday. For one thing, they have a parade for me out in Pasadena, CA that is attached to my favorite flower — and football for some inexplicable reason. They may not know it’s for me, but I do. And I get up and watch it every year, no matter what I’ve been doing the night before too. After all, if someone is going to throw a parade for you….you’re kinda obligated to be there.

A couple days ago, I started to wonder how many musicians/songwriters were born on January 1st. I googled it — cause that’s what ya do, right? – and the list was not impressive I’m sorry to say. There were very few musicians, most of whose names I’d never heard before. The most notable artist on the list wasn’t a musician but an author. J.D. Salinger was born on January 1st.

But then, I expanded the question and asked about Capricorn musicians and hit the mother-lode. (Note: It’s not that I’m a true believer, btw. It’s a convenient way to ask google though.) So here’s what I found:

Isn’t this wonderful?  Here’s something even better. Two things, actually. Dalis Allen, who is the mom for the Kerrville Folk Festival AND Southwest Regional Folk Alliance, is also a New Years baby. Happy Birthday, Dalis!!!

AND …..

One of my very favorite songwriters, and you can hear her in a lot of my songs — to the point where people tell me I sound like her, which I don’t, but I’m honored — has her birthday the day after mine, on January 2nd. So Happy Birthday, Christine Lavin!!!

Can’t say I minded finding Joan Baez, Dolly Parton, Jimmy Page, Janis Joplin, Odetta and Mary J Blige on this list either.

Many happy returns of the day to all.
