« Hawaii - Big Island (Part 2) »

More pictures from the Big Island. The last bits from The Refuge and a visit to the volcano, which is Mauna Loa and is still active.

The goddess, Pele, requires that you leave all of Hawaii in Hawaii, and there are severe consequences for taking even one bit of lava home with you. Some have tried. One person ended up mailing her "souvenirs" back, because they caused her so much trouble.

Several people are at work on outriggers like these, restoring the site and the artifacts. I'm pretty sure you have to be a Hawaiian to be allowed to work on this project.

The green turtles come to bask in the sun and enjoy their day.

The Volcano:
Mauna Loa is still active. Though the caldera is quiet, the lava seeps from crevices in the sides. In the late 80s, a lava flow came down and covered the road, taking 180 homes, some stores and a church or two with it -- and, fortunately, no lives.
We walked over the lava to see where it was still molten and flowing. You can still see the road in some places. The coastline is to the right, about a quarter of a mile away.

My Image

Lava flows, they tell me, about 35 miles an hour when it's erupting. I guess it exceeded the speed limit.

My Image

So much for speed limits!

My Image

The Park Rangers have marked out the safest path to where the flowing rock is.

My Image

It's alive!

My Image

And hot too! Mind where you step...this would sizzle your shoes up to your knees! 2000 degrees F.

My Image

The Rangers said the greatest danger was people throwing rocks into it, which would make it splash on innocent bystanders.

My Image

The view west of Kona. The ground is covered with old lava, and yet everywhere something could grow, something did! Yes, the bay was really that color, and all my other favorite shades of blue.
